Oscar Rules Change

Following a string of recent controversies, big changes have been made to the rules over campaigning for Oscars.

The overhaul to the regulations largely concerns lobbying for votes via social media posts and direct communications to Academy members.

This comes in the wake of Andrea Riseborough’s shock best actress nomination for little seen film To Leslie after her agents, publicists and celebrity friends were accused of aggressive campaigning on her behalf, especially on Twitter.

The new rules state that members cannot use social media to “encourage or discourage members to vote for any motion picture, performance or achievement.”

Further controversies in the 2023 Oscar race included public statements of support made for certain contenders and lavish parties thrown for others in a bid to win votes – both practices which have seen updated regulations.

There are new penalties too with those who step out of line subject to everything from losing voting privileges to having a nomination taken away and even expulsion from the Academy.
