Oscars Policy Shake-Up

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced updated rules for Oscar eligibility that will impact film release strategies going forward.

Starting in 2026, films seeking Best Picture consideration must now play in at least ten of the top 50 U.S. markets for a minimum of 14 days, including seven consecutive days of paid admission.

The change is designed to reinforce the theatrical experience and reduce the dominance of limited streaming-only releases.

Industry analysts say the move could reshape the awards race by compelling studios to plan wider releases for prestige titles.
