Hollywood Turns to Gaming

The huge box office success of the recent Super Mario Bros movie has made Hollywood hungry for many more films based on popular video games.

Among the iconic titles getting the green light for movie adaptations are Pac-man and Minecraft.

And big names are lining up to be involved.

Aquaman’s Jason Momoa will play the warrior Gabriel in the Minecraft movie, set for release in April 2025 from Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess.

The film of aliens v bandits game Borderlands will feature Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Hart among its voice talent.

John Wick director Chad Stahelski is developing a family based on samurai video game Ghost of Tsushima.

BioShock, Duke Nukem and Mortuary Assistant are among the others getting the big screen treatment for the first time while sequels to Silent Hill and Sonic the Hedgehog are on the way.

There are no casting details for Pac-man yet but that will be aiming to have similar success as Super Mario Bros, starring Chris Pratt, which earned $500 million globally in its first week of release to become the biggest box office hit of 2023 and highest earning video game adaptation ever.
