Tom Cruise is to be awarded an honorary Oscar in celebration of his career in film.
Many see this as long-overdue recognition for a star who has never won an acting Oscar despite three nominations—Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia.
As well as turning in countless acclaimed performances, Cruise has been a box-office winner for decades – including with his latest film Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning – and a champion of moviegoing.
Announcing the honor, outgoing Academy President Janet Yang said: “Tom Cruise’s commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all.”
