Cannes You Believe It?

Superstars, rising stars and the impact of AI provided the main talking points at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Rapturous standing ovations went to the big names who showcased their new movies at the glamorous event – Johnny Depp premiering Jeanne du Barry, Harrison Ford launching Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny and Leonardo Di Caprio introducing Killers of the Flower Moon.

But the big winner was an emerging name, French director Justine Triet who, with crime thriller Anatomy of a Fall, became only the third woman in history to land top prize the Palme d’Or.

At the world’s biggest movie marketplace, many of the conversations among film industry delegates focused on the role Artificial Intelligence would play in the future of filmmaking and this magazine’s editor, Sandro Monetti, spoke optimistically about that very subject on two major Cannes panels, one organized by the China Film Foundation and the other by the Young Presidents’ Organization.
