When the $12 million budget for killer doll film M3GAN meant the moviemakers couldn’t afford much CGI, they had to get creative.
So they relied instead on a combination of animatronics and a child actor to bring the murder machine to life – and it worked so well that the project made over $150 million at the box office.
The physical movements – M$GAN walking, dancing and killing – were done by 11-year-old Amie Donald, a champion dancer, wearing a prosthetic mask.
But the close up and medium shots of the Model 3 Generative Android – to give M#GAN her full name – were achieved with remote controlled puppets supervised by special effects genius Adrien Morot.
It all looked very lifelike to audiences and, delighted with the grosses, Universal have already announced a sequel, M3GAN 2.0, which will be released in 2025.
